Shards

Too sassy

Too smart

Too committed

Maybe that’s what you think of me.

I wish instead it were

“The two of us are sassy.”

“The two of us are smart.”

“The two of us are committed to each other.”

I exceed

when what I wanted was for us

to excel.

I don’t apologize

for not wanting to “be casual”

because “casual”,

you see,

is a one-dimensional reflection

of our fear of opening

because we don’t know each other

or rather,

we don’t know ourselves.

The things that are crooked in me

are the jagged edges that make light bounce

so if you prefer dull refraction

then my bright colors were never for you.
